Halo and Bearing Consultancy launch Show-Safe: situational judgement training for live events
Halo has co-created Show-Safe with Bearing Consultancy. It is a four-level course suite that puts event professionals through a live, escalating scenario, logs their decisions as they make them, and then tests those decisions under scrutiny. The first two courses run at the University of Northampton in November and December.
When something goes wrong at a live event, knowing the plan is rarely the hard part. The hard part is making the right call with incomplete information while the situation keeps moving, and then being able to explain that call afterwards.
Few event professionals get to practise that before it counts. Most exercises test the plan, not the people making decisions inside it. Show-Safe is built to close that gap.
How it works
Each course runs on a single live scenario that develops through the day. Participants make decisions as the picture changes, and those decisions are logged in The Halo System as they are made, just as they would be in a live control room.
At Manager and Strategic level, participants then have their decisions questioned in a mock courtroom. This is the kind of scrutiny that can follow a significant incident, and it is far better met for the first time in a training room than after a real event.
The suite covers every level of an event operation:
- Show-Safe: Operations, for those making decisions on the ground
- Show-Safe: Manager
- Show-Safe: Tactical, for Silver command
- Show-Safe: Strategic, for Gold command
The research behind it
Show-Safe is grounded in Dr Claire Drakeley’s doctoral research into how event professionals make decisions. She found that managers decide from the situation in front of them and the context of the project, not from a fixed personal attitude to risk. It means good situational judgement is not a trait people either have or lack. It is a capability that can be built and practised.
Bearing’s courses are built on two frameworks from that research: MBED (Making Better Event Decisions) and LSJF (Live Situational Judgement Framework). Halo brings Lloyd Major’s operational experience in policing, counter-terrorism and incident management, together with the practical reality of how decisions are recorded and reviewed on the day.
“People decide from the situation, so this dark art of situational judgement is something we can build. Show-Safe is where we put that into practice.”
Dr Claire Drakeley, Founder, Bearing Consultancy
“Every decision made on the day leaves a record, whether you planned for it or not. Show-Safe gives people the chance to practise making those decisions, and recording them properly, before a real event depends on it. The technology is there to support good judgement, not replace it.”
Lloyd Major, Founder and CEO, Halo Solutions
